Brazilian Rice Exports
Brazilian Rice. In Brazil, the Brazilian production of the grain comes from two cultivation systems: irrigated and rainfed, present in all regions of the country. It is among the top ten in the world, with 12 million tons for a consumption of 12.4 million tons based on bark (CONAB 2015).
In the irrigated system, the South region has greater prominence being responsible for 60% of production, with subtropical floodplains in the three states, which are responsible for supplying more than 53% of the domestic demand for the cereal. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) the largest producer of irrigated rice in the country is Rio Grande do Sul, whereas production in the rainfed system, the largest volume is concentrated in the states of Mato Grosso and Goiás.
The Brazilian grain has been directed mainly to the Latin American and African market and, considering the high quality of the Brazilian product, there is potential for expansion of Brazilian exports. Regarding Brazilian rice exports, in the first two months of the commercial year, which starts in March and runs until February 2021, exports totaled 230 thousand tons of rice (husk base), while imports totaled 188 thousand tons.
Shipments to Venezuela, one of the main destinations, are expected to continue in 2020, with the intermediation of China, which receives oil from the South American country. The United States, traditional suppliers to the Mexican market, recorded a reduction in production. In addition, India and China, the two main consumers of the grain, are reducing production, in the order of 1% and 2%, respectively.
